Sharjah Unveils Spectacular Mountain Tourist Road to Khorfakkan

In a visionary move to enhance tourism and connectivity in the emirate, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, has announced a breathtaking new road project to Khorfakkan. Described as “a wonder never seen before,” the mountainous tourist road promises to deliver not only infrastructure improvement but also a transformational experience for travelers and residents alike.

The newly announced route will begin at Al Ghuzair Tunnel and traverse dramatic landscapes to reach the highest peak in Khorfakkan, situated at an impressive 1,100 meters above sea level. The project was revealed on July 17 during the Direct Line program broadcast by the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority, reinforcing the emirate’s commitment to sustainable tourism, community development, and regional accessibility.

A Scenic Journey Through the Mountains

Unlike conventional highways, this road is envisioned as an immersive journey through nature. It will feature winding paths over mountain slopes, flanked by lush greenery, planted trees, water channels, and elegant residential structures. In addition to functioning as a major road, it will double as a tourist attraction with panoramic views, tranquil surroundings, and an opportunity to experience Sharjah’s natural beauty like never before.

Designed to complement the emirate’s cooler, more temperate winter climate, the route will be an especially popular destination for tourists and families during the seasonal months. It will not only reduce travel time to Khorfakkan but also transform the commute into a scenic, recreational, and cultural experience.

Boosting Village Connectivity and Rural Tourism

Another highlight of the project is its focus on connecting scattered mountain villages in the region. By integrating rural communities into the broader tourism framework, the road will contribute to local development, promote eco-tourism, and encourage investment in underexplored areas.

The transformation of a functional highway into a leisure-focused tourist route is a bold step toward balanced urban-rural integration. With Sharjah’s growing reputation as a cultural and environmental tourism destination, this new infrastructure is set to further elevate the emirate’s profile both nationally and internationally.

New Projects in Jabal Deem to Open by March 2026

In the same announcement, Sheikh Sultan also revealed that residents of Kalba can look forward to a series of new developments in Jabal Deem. These include rest areas, farms, and recreational playgrounds, scheduled to open in March 2026. The integration of community-centric projects reinforces the emirate’s long-term vision for inclusive development and quality of life improvements across its regions.

The addition of farms and green spaces aligns with Sharjah’s wider goals of sustainability, environmental awareness, and healthy living. The rest areas and playgrounds aim to provide much-needed recreational facilities for families and children, encouraging local tourism and enhancing daily life for residents of Kalba and surrounding areas.

Strategic Tourism Development in the Northern Emirates

The road to Khorfakkan is part of a larger strategic effort by Sharjah to enhance its status as a tourism powerhouse. From heritage restoration in the Heart of Sharjah to eco-resorts and hiking trails in the East Coast mountains, the emirate has consistently invested in unique, identity-driven tourism assets. The new mountainous road further exemplifies this approach — a fusion of infrastructure, ecology, and culture.
